The Historic Nordenskjöld Hut: A Glimpse into the Heroic Era of Antarctic Exploration - Among Antarctica’s many tales of daring and discovery, the story of the Nordenskjöld Hut and the expedition on Snow Hill Island stands as a testament to human courage and scientific curiosity.
35mm Film PHOTOGRAPHY IN ANTARCTICA
35MM FILM PHOTOGRAPHY IN ANTARCTICA
This is a collection of some casual film photos from six weeks of voyages around the Antarctic Peninsula. More to come.
Enjoy.
ANTARCTICA WEEK 2
Temperatures of the Ross Ice Shelf vary from about −5°C/23°F in the summer to about −35°C/-31°F in the winter with a record low recorded at -65°C/-85°F. These are bone chilling and deadly temperatures for humans. Meanwhile the Weddell seals just lay atop the ice and swim in the sub-zero waters to feed.
ANTARCTICA WEEK 1.5: Disappearing Darkness
While I am in Antarctica too late to enjoy the Aurora’s, I have been making a point to explore the station to photograph the darkness before it is completely gone for the season.
ANTARCTICA WEEK 1: THE ARRIVAL
We glided over the cracking sea ice and monumental mountains covered in mile-thick ice before our pilots landed the 757 onto the frozen Ross Ice Shelf.
Glassy Water & Swimming In The English Channel | Bark Europa Day 15
There is little to no wind so I help the deckhands cast some slack onto the bunt lines over the sails as preparation for any upcoming favorable winds. The water is glassy and smooth and from up on the mast, I could see the well defined shadow of Europa on the waters surface.
Guernsey and Sark Island Excursion | Bark Europa Day 14
After several days sailing in thick morning fog and afternoon rains, the Europa welcomed a fun filled excursion in the Guernsey Island Sun. After fourteen days on the ship, we welcomed that chance to stretch our legs on ground that wasn’t constantly moving sideways.
(Almost) Losing My Drone 1,000 Miles at Sea | Bark Europa Day 9
The winds have been so strong since we embarked from Horta that I was beginning to think that I would never have the chance to see Europa from the skies. I woke up this morning after a few games of late night poker with the Voyage Crew to a cool grey sky with an eerily calm sea.
Climbing the Bowsprit, The Myth Of Europa | Bark Europa Day 3
While the first of the cool air to touch the ship, first touches my face, chills run around my body and I smile as the sunshine warms the back of my neck. I feel so f***ing free. This is the coolest s**t I have ever done in my life.
Sea Sickness and Sugar | Bark Europa Day 2 - 3
Endless noise from waves lapping the sides of the ship. My sea sickness has not quite left my body yet. I lay in bed uncomfortable, too wam, too angled, too sideways, too this, and too that. Any which was I turn was the wrong way. I fall out of bed to join the crew on the poopdeck. We drop down to the maindeck and within minutes my clothes are soaked through. The rain is sideways and so is the ship.
2,000 Miles at Sea | Bark Europa Day “0” - 1
The Australian man sits in the sun for a few hours reading a book. The Swedish man seems disappointed that he cannot shake my hand because of COVID. I confuse the German woman by speaking too fast in English. I quietly admire the knowledge and discomfort of speaking a language that it not your native tongue.

AtLANTIC PUFFINS
In the early 1970’s, methods were introduced to Eastern Egg Rock in Maine that helped Puffins and other groups of seabirds like terns recolonize the island. Gull management, the translocation of nearly 1,000 young puffins from Newfoundland, and social attraction through decoys and mirror boxes, were the primary tools for restoring puffins.
